SPECIALTY EDUCATION, REGISTERED NURSE (RN), CRITICAL CARE

Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated Registered Nurse with a dedication for delivering compassionate patient care to join our team in the Critical Care department at the Ksyen Regional Hospital.

Provides and coordinates nursing care with current standards of nursing practice and the Clinical Specialty of Critical Care & Emergency/Ambulatory Care Nursing. Clinical experience to independently work in ICU and Emergency is required. Responsibilities include designated tasks on the Acute Care Unit as delegated by Head Nurse/ in-charge.

Developed by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), ECCO is an accredited program which has been utilized within BC health authorities for over two decades. The program begins with the 14 hour AACN Essentials of ECG and Dysrhythmia Monitoring. ECCO follows with a 7-week theory portion using a blend of evidence-based online learning modules, in-class review, skills labs, simulation, and clinical practicum to introduce learners to critical care nursing. Week 8 includes Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Trauma Care After Resuscitation (TCAR), which provide essential and valuable knowledge and skills to prepare learners to anticipate and provide safe patient care in the critical care setting. Week 9 focuses on the pediatric population to include Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), along with lab, simulation, and theory days to accommodate the unique geographic and patient transfer capabilities within NH.
Northern Health In-House Critical Care Training Program Details:
• There are 6 training positions available for 2025/2026
• Northern Health provides placement support and funding for tuition, textbooks, and travel expenses for clinical placements, as required
• Successful candidates may be required to complete pre-requisite courses through part-time distance education, on their own time, prior to assuming this position
• Learners should expect to make a 4 – 6 month commitment for this education, which includes online and in-person learning
• Additional study time, outside of scheduled hours, will be required to successfully complete the program
• Flexibility for practicums is necessary
• Applicants must successfully complete the education program prior to working in the department
• Upon successful completion of the education program, Northern Health requires an eighteen (18) month return of service in a regular position in the area of nursing applicable to the education program.
• Qualified applicants will be considered first for specialty positions. If there are no qualified applicants, training lines will be awarded to unqualified applicants and training will be provided

Ksyen Regional Hospital
The new Ksyen Regional Hospital welcomed its first patients on November 24, 2024. More than double the size of the previous hospital, the facility features 82 beds, private rooms, and is a centre for trauma services, orthopedic surgeries, pathology, radiology, clinical support, and pharmacy services. The hospital is also a training site for medical students in the Northern Medical Program.

The main industries in Terrace are communications, transportation and natural resources. The population is approximately 12,700. Qualifications

• Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant.
• Minimum two (2) years medical/surgical experience and/or Post Diploma Certificate in Critical Care and/or Emergency Nursing and/or equivalent combination of experience and training. Applicants without formal Emergency/Critical Care Training and/or equivalent experience will be expected to enroll in an Emergency or Critical Care Course within 6 months of receiving the job.
• CPR (Basic Life Support) certification.
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification or willingness to complete within 1 year.

Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to manage all equipment appropriate for the provision of care for patients admitted to the critical care and acute care units.
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
• Ability to deal with others effectively.
• Ability to work well on own with minimal supervision.
• Ability to assist in orientation of new personnel.
• Ability to organize and prioritize work.
